2009 So Cal MCL Team Champions
Congratulations to the 2009 Masters Cycle League Champions.
An early break of four right off the starting line included
representation from Amgen/Giant, Ironfly and Cynergy. The
excitement continued nearly the entire race as Sho-Air/Sonance's
Stephen Feretti scored the first preem points and was then
unable to hang with the break. Sho-Air/Sonanace responded
quickly sending MJ across to the break to relieve Feretti who
dropped from the break. With his fresher legs, MJ scored the
second set of preem points for the team ensuring a Sho-Air/Sonanace
MCL win but DeWalt Racing was not about to let the break stick.
DeWalt Racing came alive at two to go and with a monstrous
effort, pulled back the breakaway causing casualties throughout
the pack as it splintered on the final lap. With the breakaway
gone and a field sprint coming, Sho-Air sent fresh riders to the
front for the final points points grab with Gabriel and
Palonetti taking 1st and 2nd. Amgen-Giant scored the only other
points with a 3rd, 5th and 6th at the finish eliminating hopes
of any other teams scoring points for the day. |

Defends
its lead! |
June 23rd, 2009
It was another Sho-Air/Sonanace
day at the San Pedro Grand Prix as Sho-Air/Sonanace's Mark Fluss
and John Gabriel picked up both points preems. Totalling 26
points at San Pedro, Sho-Air/Sonanace showed it wants the 2009
MCL title. Swamis, Chris Daggs(4th) for 5 points
has moved them into the money as Ironfly c;loses the gap on
Kahala/LaGrange.

Home Team
Amgen/Giant Storms the Barry Wolfe GP
at Woodland Hills!
A huge wave of blue washed into Woodland Hills as the
Amgen/Giant/Masters team scored 22 points on their home turf. It
started with ride number #666, Gustavo Corona picking up the
first points preem a third of the way into the race. Attacks
were continuously thrown down by Helen's, Ironfly as well as
Kahala/LaGrange who responded to Amgen's preem win with a win of
its own by Aron Gadhia. In an unusual field finish with no
breakaways surviving, the entire field was blown away by the big
blue wave of Amgen/Giant masters as Thurlow Rogers and Chris
DeMarchi gave the leadout to Coxworth and Galvan for an Amgen
1-2 victory. Kahala/LaGrange, Ironfly, Helens and Sho-Air/Sonance
rode in to score a few points by making the top eight as well. |

MCL numbers big
at Torrance!
The largest field of the day at Torrance turned out to be the
MCL 35+. The teams came out in force to defend their MCL team
standings at Torrance. Helen's affirmed their intent to be a
player in this year's MCL as they picked up all three
points preems. First it was Sulse picking up not one, but two of
the points preems earning four for the team. Then, Chris Frank
took over for Joe and picked up the final preem shutting out the
others chances till the end. Sho-Air/Sonance and Ironfly saved
face by scoring in the final sprint while but Helen's remained
the biggest points winner of the day getting 17 total.
Amgen/Giant Masters drops to fourth, but watch out at Barry
Wolfe on May 24th. Amgen/Giant always fields a good team at this
race in Woodland Hills. |

The Masters Cycle League
continued to surprise all with its excitement as 8th
Wonder/Helen’s really poured on the points at the Los Angeles
Circuit Race. A charge by Sho-Air/Sonance’s Charon Smith for
the first points preem was answered by a decisive grab of the
second two points when Chris Frank could not be touched in the
preem sprint. Defending MCL Champs Ironfly, fights to score 5
points and closed in on Amegen/Giant who were shut out with no
points for the day. But then, 8th Wonder/Helen’s Joseph
Sulse rocketed his way to a 1-2 win with Sulse picking up first
and Frank picking up second place MCL points in the final
sprint. Don't miss the excellent demonstartion of teamwork when
the Masters Cycle League continues April 19th in Torrance. |

It was
Amgen/Giant scoring first
as Chris Demarchi picked up the first
points preem of the year at the Roger Millikan Criterium. Then,
a decisive move by Kahala/LaGrange's Aron Gadhia tied the score.
With a huge field of 125 riders and 11 MCL teams, the final
chance to score points became one huge mass sprint. Amgen/Giant's Antony Galvan scored the 8 point win but the depth of Sho-Air/Sonance
team gave them the win for the day scoring 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th
for 16 points. Amgen/Giant's 1st, 4th and 2 point preem keeps
them within one point of the leaders, while Ironfly, Swami's and
Kahala/LaGrange make the scoreboard. |

Ironfly
wins 2008 MCL title!
It was a nail biter as Mark
Scott of Cynergy Cycles easily scored both points preems,
reducing Ironfly's lead to just 10 points. Hector Saldana, Mark
Scott and G3 all threatened the lead with breakaway attempts,
but the entire field came back together when it was time for the
end game. With one non-MCL rider escaping on a solo break, it
would be up to the sprinters to score the end points from the
final field sprint. Victor Ayala (La Grange) wound up taking the
eight sprint points in the end with Ironfly's Phillips scoring
seven points just edging out Cynergy's Mark Scott for six. But
the depth of the Ironfly team also was evident as Rob Kampilla,
Vince Dimeglio and Greg Lonergan also scored points sealing the
season's win for Ironfly. Schroeder's Brett Claire and Major
Motion's Mike Davis also earned points closing an outstanding
MCL season and one of the closest ever.
 |

|
Ironfly retains lead as Cynergy Cycles scores big
points.
Outnumbered by Cynergy Cycles, Ironfly
still holds a close lead. Ironfly's Phillips scored the
most points possible by one rider in an MCL race as he
took both points preems as well as the final win! The
competition again was vicious on this challenging, hilly
course. Rider attrition was abundant during the day
costing NOW/MS its chance to score as Antony Galvan
abandoned. With the climb putting the hurt on the field,
Ironfly's Phillips timed his attacks just right to pick
up both points preems as well as the big 8 points at
stake in the final finish. But the depth of Cynergy's
team showed as Cynergy placed five riders in the points
final sprint to earn top team points for the day. Starr,
Bausch, Konsmo, Leibert and Fluss brought home the bulk
of the MCL points for Cynergy passing Schroeder Iron and
bringing them into second place in the standings.
Ironfly's Kampilla and Dimeglio earned 6th and 7th place
MCL points to help maintain Ironfly's lead over Cynergy.
The series is too close to call now as Ironfly holds a
mere 14 point lead so it's all up to the finals coming

June 22, 2008 Schroeder
vs. Ironfly!
San Pedro Grand
Prix
The battle raged furiously as
Ironfly launched two unsuccessful attempts at both two point
preems, but it was Schroeder's Bud Owens who snagged both of
them. An incredibly fast breakaway of Thurlow Rogers and Tom
Farley managed to elude the pack for the remainder of the race
but in the end, it was Ironfly's Kevin Phillips who won the key
eight MCL points when he clinched the field sprint with Dimeglio
and Kampilla scoring another ten for Ironfly. Cynergy Cycles
Romney, Rubin and Worthington held on to score six points total
for their team while Scott Evans picked up five points for
NOW/MS. Next race is the San Marcos Criterium July 27th.

Schroeder Iron
takes the lead!
Barry Wolfe
Once again it was new MCL team Schroeder Iron who
demonstrated the teamwork required by placing Frank
Schroeder himself in the winning breakaway at the Barry
Wolfe Memorial Grand Prix. Earlier attacks that took
place by Ironfly's Kevin Phillips failed to secure
those elusive mid-race points preems as Antony Galvan(NOW/MS) and Frank Schroeder (Ironfly) stole them
with their well timed attacks. Ironfly's Greg Lonergan
saved the the day by picking up third place points in
the final sprint to keep Ironfly at still one point away
from the lead now held by Schroeder Iron. Next race-San

Schroeder Iron scores big!
It was new MCL team Schroeder Iron who shined the
brightest today at the
Torrance Crit
as the pack was animated by Pat Caro,
Craig Miller, Bud Owens and Frank Schroeder. Several
attacks took place throughout the race but the key
attack was Kevin Phillips (Ironfly) who rode away solo to
win each of the 2 point MCL preems. Later, Ironfly
launched Todd Lipson to pick up 6 points for third in
the final sprint bringing Ironfly to within one point of
the lead! Newcomer to MCL, Bob Spalding (PenCC) scored 3
points for his team keeping them just tied with NOW/MS.

Matthews(Major Motion) scoring 5 and 6 points each at

New team
Amgen /Giant Masters scores highest points for the day!
Battle for the lead again changes hands.
Amgen/Giant Masters Cimadoro and Onkels were top points earners
for the day over all the other teams. Action started with
Cynergy Cycles sending off Ephram Starr for the first 2 point
preem early in the race but at a cost to the team. Ephram
withdrew soon after scoring those points. The winning breakaway
of six riders included both Amgen/Giant Masters team members who
helped set a devastating pace that the peloton could not match.
Mike Onkels then powered away from the break to a fantastic solo
win! Turned out, five of the six breakaway riders were members
of leading MCL teams which helped to shake up the standings yet
again. NOW/MS Society was shut out today and lost their lead to
Cynergy again but only by 5 points. Unable to field a full team,
Velo Club La Grange dropped from third to fourth in overall
standings also as a result of Central Coast Magazine's strong
climbers who scored 5th, 7th and 8th. An outstanding second
place by Simon Nung brought Sixtufit up to 8 points in the
overall standings and positioned them to make the final event
critical to overtaking Motortabs who now leads Sixtufit by just
one point.

WEST LA COLLEGE GRAND PRIX

Coast Magazine and Cynergy Cycles both earn 16 points at West LA College
Grand Prix.
 |
 |
"WHEN ALL YOU HAVE IS A
HAMMER, EVERYTHING ELSE IS A NAIL."
Johnny Rondash after flatting just before the finish.
Today's MCL race was filled with
hammers that proved, some days you just get nailed. NOW/MS went from a
high score of 17 points at the Torrance Crit in April to a mere 2 points
today at the West LA College GP. Picking off the first two point preem
was all NOW/MS could do as they faced a completely different kind of
venue. What's this? A 600 meter, 4% hill climb each lap to the finish???
Ouuch, how sadistic!! But good news for strong climbing teams Cynergy
Cycles and Central Coast Magazine(CCM) who's teams each placed riders in
the winning breakaway of five. Mark Fluss picked up the other 2
point preem for CCM and scored the winning 8 points at the final sprint
but Cynergy Cycles Greg Leibert maintained an MCL second place in the
break for 7 points. Another league first, Cynergy Cycles and CCM
both earned 16 points today for the first ever tie in the daily points.
Gadhia and Mendigochea still kept event host club La Grange on the
scoreboard by earning their team six points for what is now the closest
MCL season ever. What's next? Find out at the next MCL race as the San
Pedro Grand Prix hosts round 4 of the MCL on Saturday, June 23rd.

Cynergy Cycles - 4 points
Sixtufit - 1 point |
Was it the hair? Or
more like hare? Rondash toyed with the field today like a rabbit and
spent most of the race making others chase.
Picking off the first two point
preem looked easy for Rondash as he scored with a smile. Teammate Antony
Galvan then grabbed the other two point preem. Literaly living on the
front of the pack the whole race, Rondash and Galvan then 1-2'd the
second and third place positions in the final sprint for 7+6 points
bringing NOW-MS Society's score for the day to 17 points! Newcomers
Central Coast Magazine riders Gary Hanson and Mark Noble scored 10
points putting their team into fourth place in the league standings.
Cynergy and La Grange struggled against the powerful teams that
outnumbered them today but still managed to pick up a few points in the
final sprint thanks to Wooton for Cynergy and Gadhia/Mendigochea for La
Grange. Competition is heating up and the teams and the excitement
continue to grow! The next race is hosted by the team currently in
second place and the course suits their climbers well. Who will have the
best MCL team in 2007? Find out by attending the remaining races

March 25th,
2007 - LA Circuit Race provides closest competition ever! Velo Club La Grange scores first but Cynergy Cycles
takes lead in final sprint.
Aron Gadhia (La Grange)
scored the first two point preem today at the season opener for MCL. It
was no contest as he scored the preem with at least a four bike length
lead to the next closest rider. An unfortunate mishap took out both a
Cynergy and PCC team rider but Cynergy still managed to score just
enough points in the final sprint to take the lead. Motortabs
Rodriguez and Valentine scored five points to just edge out PCC's four
for fourth place for the day.
Cynergy Cycles - 17 points
La Grange - 14 points (includes 2pt preem)
NOW/MS - 11 points
Motortabs - 5 points
PCC - 4 points |

July 30th 2006 Series Finals
Armin Rahm, Michael Dansk and Simon Ung all scored points again today in the league
preventing Labor Power's only rider, Karl Bordine from getting the series win.
Bordine did the best he possibly could though, winning the final sprint over all
other riders for eight MCL points. But the real deal was the strong show of
defense put on by Allegiant Air in covering the atacks from Labor and Sixtufit.
Allegiant Air riders Dave and Todd both covered attempts by Bordine and
frustrated Sixtufit/Merril Lynch's attacks as well. Ironfly put it's team on the scoreboard when
Kevin Phillips slipped away into a properly timed breakaway. Seeing Ironfly as
no threat to the overall team standings, Phillips picked up the first two point
preem while in the breakaway. Later, Simon Ung of Sixtufit/PAA/Merrill Lynch
soloed away to secure the second two point preem and Bike Palace/Keller Williams
scored for the first time in the league with Billy Cubillas placing seventh in
the final sprint. With Allegiant Air scoring points for third and fourth
places in the final sprint, the math just didn't add up for Labor fielding only
one team rider tosay and Allegiant Air maintained it's lead for the overall team
series win.
Final Results
July 15th, 2006

Armin Rahm, Michael Dansk and Fritz Bottger all scored today in the league.
Armin went away from the pack for both points preems, then finished first with
Bottger and Dansk second and third! Karl Bordine, representing Labor Power
placed fourth with Todd Cirata of Allegiant Air right on his wheel for fifth.
Labor closed in on Allegiant Air but the top two teams still remained unchanged.
Sixtufit/PAA/Merrill Lynch however has now placed itself in a solid third place
with it's 25 points! Watch for serious action at the MCL finals July 30th at the
Paramount Criterium in Rancho Dominguez.

Fitness rider Alan Richberg took second which was good for 7 points for his
team.

Labor and Team Helen's no shows lead to points for Allegiant Air!
With only Canari and Merrill Lynch/Sixtufit/PAA to challenge them, Team
Allegiant Air/Matt Smith jumped into second place in the MCL series. Scoring not
only both 2 point preems but also the win, Allegiant Air's Lance Coburn scored
12 points today for his team. Teammate Eric Broussard's unfortunate and poorly
timed flat tire caused his retirement from the race and loss of the potential to
score additional points. But it was not an easy win for Allegiant with still a
challenging field. Allegiant needed to bridge a gap to the winning breakaway
that then stayed away to the finish.
Canari picked up second place points, putting their team on the scoreboard.

Today's 2 points preems were split
between Helen's and Labor. When Paul Che (Team Helen's) picked off one of the
two point preems, Labor countered sending Jason Bausch to grab the other preem.
At 30 minutes into the race with the teams tied at 2 points each, it was time
for the breakaway to lap the field and that they did. With the large break
containing riders representing 24 Hour Fitness, Helens and Allegiant Air, it
came down to the final sprint won by field lapper, David Worthington (Labor).
Team Helen's Paul Che picked up 7 points for his team with second place to add
to teammate Kirk Bausch's one point for 8th place. But Jason Bausch also scored
third in the final sprint giving Labor the lead by adding his 6 points. 24 Hour
Fitness put themselves on the scoreboard with a respectable fifth and sixth
place good for 7 points total.

March 27th, coming to
Irvine
Anthill Criterium at UCI April 9th, 2006
This course is challenging and hilly! With 1/3 climbing,
1/3 flat and 1/3 downhill, the second in the MCL series will favor a different
kind of rider. Riders who can do hill sprints and handle challenging down hills
will excell at this race. The Anthill Crit on the campus of UC Irvine will
require teams to field their best hill sprinters as this course finishes on an
incline. UCI's Anthill Criterium is also a great fit with the concept of team
competition as collegiate cycling categories will also compete.
Collegiate cycling requires teamwork as only team prizes are allowed. Additional
USCF categories available too.

March 19th, 2006
Master's Cycle League 1st event in Torrance
The Masters Cycle League started off with fast and furious attacks from some
riders who had raced already earlier in the day! Lance was even in the attacks
and scored points! Lance Coburn that is, racing for Allegiant Air/Matt Smith.
Driving the attacks was Labor Power who fielded a team of only three riders at
Torrance. Jason Bausch, Evan Teske and a an "on form" Karl Bordine made it
to the right places at the right times with Teske and Bordine making the break
of seven riders who eventually lapped the field. With them were representatives
from other MCL registered teams that still posed a scoring threat. Team Helens
rider Paul Che brought home seven points for the team in the final sprint with
second place and a rules interpretation forced a split of the only two point
preem during the race with one point each going to Labor and Team Helens. MCL
teams Canari, Merrill Lynch and Delta Cases kept the competition interesting
with their visibility near the front of the field. Bausch picked up the field
sprint for Labor at the end and even though seven riders lapped the field,
Bausch still scored four points for the team by placing 5th overall (Non-MCL
registered riders earn no MCL series points). Lance Coburn (Allegiant
Air/Matt Smith) placed 4th to put his team on the scoreboard! Not bad for
Allegiant with only one team member at today's race! Watch for Allegiant to
field their entire team at Irvine coming up April 9th. It's not too late to sign

Back On Track Productions brings back the Master's Cycle League.
On the cutting edge and always offering new things, Back On Track
created and operated a moderately successful league in 1999. As Y2K approached,
news of the West Coast's MCL traveled Nationwide and sponsorship interest grew. But an incredibly strong Labor Power team rolled away with the title
decisively each year, leaving little chance for other teams. Now, with new
2005 rules ensuring that teams have closer and more exciting competition, and
that no one team will be able to take a clear advantage, the Master's Cycle
League is back. |
