April 2010
Amgen-UBS Elite Masters
Continues to
Extend So Cal Lead at Torrance
With all the top masters
riding for one team in So Cal, this year's MCL is a runaway!
Paolinetti and Roger's field lap trick secured 1st and 2nd
and with DeMarchi, Correa, Coxworth and Gadhia all scoring,
there weren't many points leftover for CA Pools or
Sho-Air/Sonance. Peter Anderson put in a great effort
for fourth place for CA Pools moving them up from 6th to 4th
place in the standings. Is it over for the rest of the teams
in So Cal? Find out at the end of May at the Barry Wolf GP. |

March 2010
Amgen-UBS Elite Masters
Extends So Cal Lead
Now that all the top masters
ride for one team, it's appropriate that they move farther
ahead in So Cal's MCL series. New addition, Aron
Gadhia(Amgen-UBS) picked up the first points preem at LA
Circuit followed by Gustavo Corona(Amgen-UBS). And then
taking the final sprint at the line it was Gaghia who picked
up another 8 for the team. Ooops, Amgen-UBS did not declare
which six riders were their points winners for the day so
for the first time, a penalty was assessed of 5 points
against Amgen. They still may be unstoppable as the series
continues on April 18th at
Torrance. |

Team Safeway/Bicycles
Plus/PureRed Creative Takes Nor Cal MCL Lead. |
 |
Feb 7th, 2010 - The Cherry Pie Criterium
was host for the first ever Nor Cal MCL race on February 7th
in Napa. The Eagle Racing Team in conjunction with the Eagle
Cycling Club hosted this 35th annual event under outstanding
weather as the sun broke through for a great day of dry
criterium road racing. With a technical course including an
uphill finish, a talent filled field included notables like
Dean Laberge and Lawrence Nolan (Team Specialized Racing
Masters), as well as Morgan Stanley/Smith Barney's Chris
Phipps and Williamswheels.com's Michael Sayers. Team
Safeway's Dan Martin made the winning break of six riders
before the midway point and scored both 2 point preems as
well as a full 8 point score in the final finish. Betonte
and Weissenberger also scored for Safeway. HDR Racing
presented by Lombardi Sports scored 15 points giving them a
solid second place standing over Fightin' Bobas and Third
Pillar who are both tied for third. Next Nor Cal MCL race is
on March 13th in Monterey at the
Central Coast
Circuit Race.
So Cal's season opener is on Sunday, February 14th at the
Roger Millikan Memorial St. Valentines Day Criterium.
Teams, be sure to field your best suited riders for the flat
and fast So Cal Course! |

An early break of
four right off the starting line included representation
from Amgen/Giant, Ironfly and Cynergy. The excitement
continued nearly the entire race as Sho-Air/Sonance's
Stephen Feretti scored the first preem points and was
then unable to hang with the break. Sho-Air/Sonanace
responded quickly sending MJ across to the break to
relieve Feretti who dropped from the break. With his
fresher legs, MJ scored the second set of preem points
for the team ensuring a Sho-Air/Sonanace MCL win but
DeWalt Racing was not about to let the break stick.
DeWalt Racing came alive at two to go and with a
monstrous effort, pulled back the breakaway causing
casualties throughout the pack as it splintered on the
final lap. With the breakaway gone and a field sprint
coming, Sho-Air sent fresh riders to the front for the
final points points grab with Gabriel and Palonetti
taking 1st and 2nd. Amgen-Giant scored the only other
points with a 3rd, 5th and 6th at the finish eliminating
hopes of any other teams scoring points for the day. |

Ironfly
wins
2008 MCL title!
It was a nail biter as Mark
Scott of Cynergy Cycles easily scored both points preems,
reducing Ironfly's lead to just 10 points. Hector Saldana, Mark
Scott and G3 all threatened the lead with breakaway
attempts, but the entire field came back together when
it was time for the end game. With one non-MCL rider
escaping on a solo break, it would be up to the
sprinters to score the end points from the final field
sprint. |
|
Victor Ayala (La Grange) wound up taking the
eight sprint points in the end with Ironfly's Phillips scoring
seven points just edging out Cynergy's Mark Scott for six. But
the depth of the Ironfly team also was evident as Rob Kampilla,
Vince Dimeglio and Greg Lonergan also scored points sealing the
season's win for Ironfly. Schroeder's Brett Claire and Major
Motion's Mike Davis also earned points closing an outstanding
MCL season and one of the closest ever. |
